If you read my History page, you will know that the Teal Camper came about from the desire to avoid on-the-ground tent camping. I also wanted something more substantial than a thin canvas between me and the critters that roam the woods at night.
The Teal Camper is a blend of tent camping and travel trailer security. It provides the safety and comfort of a hard sided trailer, with the basic amenities of tent camping. It can be disassembled and stored at the end of a camping trip or camping season, like a tent. Therefore, all the components are designed with light-weight and compact storage in mind. There is no internal plumbing or wiring. All the appliances (lights, water, stove, toilet, shower, etc.) are self contained units readily found at camping supply stores. That doesn't mean that a handy do-it-yourselfer couldn't hard wire, plumb or build in permanent fixtures. That is certainly an option. Air conditioning is a challenge, as it is in any small travel trailer or camper. I am working on resources for a small, portable unit that could be used with the Teal Camper. Here in the high Rockies air conditioning is not a big issue, but I know that it is a must in other areas of the country. I will post my progress on this from time to time. Flexibility is the key to the modular Teal Camper. With a little creativity and imagination, you can have a highly energy efficient, comfortable and enjoyable shelter away from home at a very reasonable price. |

Larry, this sounds like it would fit my needs. I am 57 years old and slightly mobility-challenged. No more tent-on-the-ground camping for me.
An affordable, hard-side, occasional camper - super light-weight so I can tow it with my wee smart car - your modular approach looks like I could customize it to be just what I want it to be! |

Being small enough for a 4 x 8 trailer and being light weight made it sound like a possible option for a camping trailer that a Smart car to two. There is some discussion of the Teal on the towing section of the forum at Smart Car of America.
http://www.smartcarofamerica.com The small AC unit sounds appealing. Summers in central NJ can be hot and humid. |
